Cal. 18 Bore. S# NSN. Antonio Castiglione is listed as working in Brescia around 1815. This fine gun probably dates a bit earlier. It has 36" twist steel barrels with breech section nicely fluted. Right lock fires top barrel and left lock fires bottom. Locks with chamfered plates have filed in teats at rears and feature inset gull wing type semi-waterproof pans, bridled friction frizzens and feather springs with decoratively filed beaded finials. Cocks are of serpentine style and deeply chamfered. Right lock is engraved "Castiglione" in script and left "a Brescia". Both under a triangular mark "M" over "BM". Half stock of burl figured European walnut is brass mounted with heavy buttplate with foliate top tang. Trigger guard has matching finial. Two slip on bands, front with sling loop, attach stock to barrels. Grip and forpiece are neatly checkered in recessed fancy pattern. CONDITION: good. Barrel and locks cleaned to silver gray with considerable pin prick pitting overall. Stock retains most of its original French polish finish with a very large number of scratches, dings and marks. Checkering also shows some dings and is lightly worn. Bores are good; lightly pitted. Locks complete and strong. PROVENANCE: from the renowned collection of quality sporting arms from Lewis Drake together with inventory of Lewis Drake Associates. (01-26102/MGM). ANTIQUE. $5,000-8,000.
