Cal. 38. NSN. Bbl. 42 1/2" oct. measuring 1 1/4" across flats at muzzle. Top flat has maker's name "W. FOSTER". "American Gunsmiths" by Frank Sellers has the following listing "FOSTER, WILLIAM, North Liberty, Pennsylvania, 1850c-1861d. Percussion fullstock." Engraved island mounted back action lock & hammer marked "WOLFF & LANE PITTSBURGH". Dbl. set triggers. Key fastened full length curly maple cheekpiece stock. Right side of butt is fitted w/ rectangular lid, pierced & segmented brass patch box. Other brass fittings include crescent buttplate, toeplate, sideplate escutcheon, fore-stock plate & muzzle cap. Hardwood ramrod held by brass thimble & 2 pipes. Weight: 14 lbs., 8 oz. CONDITION: metal has a dark patina appearance w/ scattered spots of corrosion having deeper pitting in breech area. Stock has aged darkened appearance showing scratches, dents w/ cracks forward of lock, sideplate & break in thimble area. Functioning lock & trigger. Dark lightly pitted bore retaining strong rifling. (01-18099/DS). ANTIQUE. $3,000-6,000.
