AND ACCESSORIES. Cal. 14 bore. S# 8252 (CA 1840). John Rigby was the first in Great Britian to make true Damascus barrels and their product was usually given an etched finish enhanced by bright polish. The 30" barrels on this gun exhibit that quality and are engraved "Wm & Jn Rigby Dublin" on slightly raised game rib. Patent breeches are inlaid with platinum lines and are fitted with vented platinum blow outs. Breech iron is semi-relief engraved with well done interwoven scroll. Back spring locks with round faced hammers having dolphin heads are engraved with matching scroll. Maker's name is in ribbon on each lockplate. Trigger plate has very stylized pineapple finial. Trigger guard is engraved with Spaniel flushing a partridge on bow, S# is on tang which has Celtic knot engraving. Stock of very finely marbled, stump figured European walnut measures 14 7/8" over steel buttplate with long scroll engraved top tang. Flat top point pattern checkering is at grip. Stock attaches to barrels with captive sidebolt through oval silver escutcheons. Greenheart ramrod with brass head and tail (worm under tail) mounts through two beaded pipes and thimble which matches trigger plate. MEASUREMENTS: STOCK: DAH: 2 1/8". DAC: 1 1/2". CAST: neutral. LOP: 14 7/8". WEIGHT: 7 lb. 8 oz. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: gun is housed in its original mahogany case with inlet brass corners. A circular "D" ring handle with central medallion is on top. Case has dual pivoting hook and key lock closure (gun S# is stamped in wood to left of lock). Case is lined in green cloth and has paper Rigby label in lid. Bottom compartment contains fluted copper bodied powder flask by Hawksley, leather shot flask by Dixon, dusting brush, powder measure, brass capper by Sykes, ebony handled turn screw, ebony handled nipple jag, large and small oil bottles by Dixon, a wad punch marked "14" and a tin for Rigby's improved copper caps containing mop, Turks head and spare lock screws. CONDITION: very good as lightly refinished. Barrels with cleaning to bright polish, traces of case hardening color remain on breech and lockplates. Trigger guard shows slight traces of blue but it and buttplate are mostly silver gray. Stock shows light oil refinish with subsequent marks, checkering cleaned up. Bores are shiny with frosting evident toward muzzles, three position locks are fine. Case exterior shows varnish refinish with some light marks. Cloth in lid replaced, label reinstalled. Bottom compartment is fine with solid partitions, accessories are fine. (01-22002/MGM). ANTIQUE. $3,500-5,500.
