WITH BOARD STOCK. Cal. 455 Webley. S# 5959. Bbl. 5". The Webley Mark I No. 2 pistol was developed for the Royal Horse Artillery, the WWI British Air Force, before the advent of the synchronized machine gun. The pistol differed significantly from the earlier Mark I No. 1 in terms of having a rotatable 4-position rear sight, an additional hammer safety, and a frame slot for attachment of a flatboard shoulder stock. The pistol was approved for military service in 1915 after which just under 500 pistols were assembled, making this variation the most collectible of the Webley big caliber semi-automatic pistols. This example has a 5" bbl. with a fixed front sight and the usual 4-position rotatable rear sight graduated from 50-100-150-200 yards. The left side of the slide is marked with the W&S winged bullet logo followed by a 3-line address referencing the mfg., caliber, model, and production year in 1915. The S# is marked under the forward extension of the frame and repeated on the left side of the traditional grip safety, underside of bbl., and interior of slide. Scattering of small British proofs in the usual areas. Fitted with brown vulcanite checkered/bordered grips. The left side of the frame is slotted for a provision of a shoulder stock. Rotatable lanyard ring on back strap. Push button at base of frame allows release of standard Mark I No. 1 mag. with 6-indicator holes, 2 mag. catches on spine and an integral floorplate. MAGS: 1 8-rd. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: fabulously well made reproduction board shoulder stock with detailing to include fine British proofing on left side of iron. CONDITION: 97-98% salt blue refinish over scattered light pitting. Near excellent original grips. Dull bore with shallow rifling. Correct manual mechanics. Reproduction stock, with excellent fit to pistol, in near new condition. One of the scarcest large caliber Webley semi-automatic pistols, especially impressive when matched to its shoulder stock. (25-3553/LMA). CURIO. $3,500-5,000.
