POLICE LUGER SEMI-AUTOMATIC PISTOL WITH INTACT WALTHER SAFETY. Cal. 9x19mm. S# 6191h. Bbl. 3 15/16". P.08 Luger semi-automatic pistol originally mfg. in 1917 and subsequently retained after World War I under the Treaty of Versailles for police use. The top of the bbl. extension is marked "1920/ 1917", with Erfurt arsenal proofs marked on the right. Toggle is marked with a crown over "ERFURT". Front grip strap likely had a unit marking, which appears to have been scrubbed. Metal components exhibit a rust blue finish overall, with some small parts exhibiting a straw finish. Frame is mounted with 2-piece checkered wood grips. Standard dovetailed blade front sight and fixed V-notch rear sight. Left side of the bbl. extension is fitted with a police Schiwy sear safety. Remarkably, the Walther trigger / mag. safety appears to remain completely intact. Introduced in 1933/1934, the Walther trigger / mag. safety was short lived, with an decree given in 1937 by the Reichs Leader SS and Chief of German Police ordering trigger safeties of any kind to be disabled. Subsequently, nearly all Walther safeties were disabled via grinding of the front cam lug or were removal entirely. As such, intact Walther trigger / mag. safeties are virtually never encountered and are highly sought after by collectors. All serialized parts are matching and include the frame, takedown lever, sideplate, trigger, safety lever & bar, hold-open latch, bbl., bbl. extension, trigger bar, breechblock, extractor, as well as the toggles. Grips are matching via "91", with "91" stamped in large block numerals on the left panel, and small block characters on the right. Firing pin is unnumbered. MAGS: 1 plated 8-rd. with likely period armorer renumbered matching aluminum plug. CONDITION: metal components retain large amounts of their period arsenal blue finish, exhibiting mild edge wear, some areas of wear and thinning fading to gray and brown patinas, as well as some light surface oxidation overall. Strawed parts exhibit varying degrees of wear, with scattered spots of age related discoloration. Relatively bright bore, exhibiting consistent light to mild pitting, while retaining strong rifling throughout. Proper manual mechanics. Grips show some smoothing, as well as some superficial marks and impressions from handling and storage, with the left panel exhibiting a repaired chip in the usual area, at and to the right of the safety lever. An honest double date Erfurt P.08 police Luger, equipped with a seldom seen intact Walther safety. (25-6066/MLW). CURIO. $1,200-1,800.
