W. H. HOBAUGH WITH ZEISS SCOPE. Cal. 338 Win Mag. S# 57791. This attractive rifle appears to have been completely custom made by W. H. Hobaugh from Montana, who was a fairly well-known gunsmith in the '60's. It has 24" medium weight sporter barrel which has been ported, left rear is stamped with caliber and maker's name. "L61R" Sako action has bolt body engine turned and is fitted with scope bases. Well made stock of very nicely streaked European walnut shows 50's vintage Griffin & Howe styling and measures 13 5/8" over basketweave brown solid pad. Stock features G&H style shadow line right hand cheekpiece, ebony forend tip, steel grip cap, engraved recoil bolt, and very well cut borderless multi-point pattern checkering at grip and around forend. A gold oval on toeline is engraved "NEJ". A woven leather sling is in QD loops. Rifle is fitted with Zeiss Diavari C 3-9X scope with duplex reticle in clamp-on mounts. CONDITION: very fine, retaining nearly all custom finishes on wood and metal, wood shows a good scattering of marks and dings associated with some time in the field. Bore is very fine, action smooth. Scope is very fine, close to "as new", optically clear. (22-5848/MGM). MODERN. $1,500-2,500.
