Cal. about 44. NSN. Bbl. 35 1/2" heavy oct. w/ rounded muzzle for bullet starter. Globe front sight, missing post, w/ iron strap mounted globe rear sight extending over top tang. Right bbl. flat marked "WHITMORE". The rifle was likely the work of Nathan Whitmore. American Gunsmiths by Frank Sellers list the following information: "WHITMORE, NATHAN, (1805-1885). Potsdam, New York, -1885. Percussion target rifles (Swinney)". Blued back action lock & hammer. Dbl. set triggers. Key fastened cheekpiece walnut stock w/ pewter tip. German silver fittings consist of crescent buttplate, toeplate, sideplate escutcheon, finger curl trigger guard & key escutcheons. WEIGHT: 14 lbs. 12.4 oz. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: brass eyeglass that telescopes from 5 1/2" to 11 1/4". Optics are cloudy. Sm. salt horn w/ wood plug. Overall length 3 1/2". CONDITION: bbl. & lock blue is fading to a mottled patina. Stock shows light wear w/ scattered scratches & marks having sm. chip forward of lock. Bore is dark w/ scattered pitting retaining sound rifling. (01-16975 & 02-13212 (2)/DS). ANTIQUE. $500-800.
