RIFLE. Cal. 46. S# 5913 (1853). This high quality small bore rifle has 30" twist steel octagon barrel with under rib. Top flat is engraved "Wilkinson & Son Gunmakers to His Majesty. Pall Mall London". A newer "u" notch rear sight and sourdough front bead are installed in front of 1-1/2" dovetail for express rear sight (dovetail plugged). Bottom of barrel is stamped with London black powder proofs and S#. Breech plug is nicely filed and has vented platinum blowout. Front spring lock with back sliding stalking safety is fitted with flat faced serpentine hammer. Lock and breech iron are engraved with well cut scroll. "Wilkinson & Son" is on bottom of lockplate. Trigger plate with standard trigger has pineapple finial. Trigger guard engraved with running stag on bow has S# engraved at grip, which has curved spur. Half stock with horn tip is made of lightly figured European walnut and measures 14-1/4" over steel buttplate which has stag and scroll engraved on long top tang. A silver rectangle at top of grip is engraved with a crowned goose rampant under the crown of a Duke. Stock attaches to barrel with single side bolt and is checkered at grip. Greenheart ramrod with horn tip and brass tail mounts through two plain pipes and iron thimble. CONDITION: good. Barrel retaining most of what appears to be original brown with good definition to twist pattern but exhibits light pin prick pitting overall. Other metal parts cleaned to pewter gray. Stock retains most of its French polish finish with a good number of marks, dings and bumps. Seven groove rifle bore is very fine, shiny with some light frosting. Lock is good. Safety does not function. A great little deer rifle. PROVENANCE: from the renowned collection of quality sporting arms from Lewis Drake together with inventory of Lewis Drake Associates. (01-26114/MGM). ANTIQUE. $3,000-6,000.
