Cal. 44 HRF. S# 65290. This exact rifle S# 65290 is pictured in Madis's Winchester 1st edition 1961 on page 84. It is estimated that only 570 of the 171,000 Model 1866s were mfg with nickel/ part nickel finish. Bbl. 24" octagon with nickel silver blade replacement front sight, full buckhorn graduated leaf rear sight, with unusual added mid-range Vernier tang sight having brass adj. screw. Full length mag. Action, forearm cap, and crescent trapdoor buttplate are nickel finished. Forearm and straight grip stock of fancy grade black walnut. Toeline of the stock and forearm cap have original sling swivels. Top tang channel of stock is marked with matching assembly #. Mfg. in 1871. CONDITION: bbl. and mag. tube blue shows fading to a pleasing dark patina appearance, forward portion has been refinished over light pits. Action retains over 90% nickel finish showing scratches and marks. Lightly sanded and refinished wood shows some remaining scratches and marks. 1 buttplate screw is a replacement. Sound action. Bore retains strong rifling showing scattered spots of pitting. (01-28021/DS). ANTIQUE. $6,000-10,000.
