DELUXE SELF LOADING RIFLE. Cal. 22 Win. Auto. S# 76964. The engraving on this striking rifle is the work of Angelo Stokes who was a factory engraver at Winchester for a few years in the early 1900's. The engraving features the popular rabbit scene on the right and squirrel scene on the left side. The scenes are surrounded by scroll and borders in a style that typify Stokes work and continue to upper & lower surfaces of the action as well the forend cap. The action, forend cap and crescent steel buttplate are elegantly gold finished. The blue finished 20" bbl. is fitted with a W. F. Sheard front sight, filler in rear dovetail and Marbles combination tang sight. Forend and deluxe pistol grip stock of fancy black walnut feature style "H" checkering and have a small hard rubber grip. 126,000 M1903's were produced from 1903,1936, the serial number of this rifle indicates 1914 mfg. CONDITION: The action retains over 80% gold showing finish loss in carry areas that have faded to a dark brown patina. The forend cap has 50% gold blending with patina. The buttplate shows gold in protected areas. Over 90% lightly faded bbl. blue. Original wood finish & checkering exhibit light wear and crazing with scattered small handling marks. Bright bore retains very good rifling. (22-4801/DS). CURIO. $12,500-17,500.
