ACTION RIFLE. Cal. 44 WCF (44-40). S# 35033. Bbl. 24" octagon. Sporting front & rear sights w/ reproduction Vernier tang sight. Full length mag. Action has unsigned Ulrich style custom aftermarket hand engraving. Left sideplate features a running deer. Right sideplate has an open banner for inscription. Balance of sides have vine type foliate scroll engraving w/ punch dot backgrounds & straight line borders. Complimentary engraving extends to upper & lower receiver areas as well as forearm cap. Nickel finish. Forearm & straight grip stock of nicely grained walnut w/ nickel finished trapdoor crescent steel buttplate & sling swivels. Stocks have style H hand checkering. Inside left of lower tang is marked w/ assembly number "96". Top tang channel has matching assembly number "96" along w/ "P" indicating plating. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: Cody Firearms Museum Records Office letter, "Date In: 6-9-1879 / Rifle / Bbl Shape: Oct / Trigger: Set / Nickel: Full / Date Shipped: 6-12-1879 / Order #: 15529". Also included is a letter dated May 28th, 1985 from the Buffalo Bill Historical Center Research Associate William L. Porter. This letter has the same information as the records office's letter w/ the addition of "checkered stock / engraved $2.50 / received in the warehouse on June 9, 1879". Also included is a four piece cleaning rod stored in stock compartment. CONDITION: metal has over 95% nickel finish showing small spots of corrosion. Stock has lightly worn finish & checkering w/ scratches, marks & small dents. Sound action. Bore shows scattered light pitting & retains strong rifling. (01-26438/DS). ANTIQUE. $4,000-8,000.
