SHOTGUN. Cal. 12 GA, 2 5/8". S# 1155. Beginning is 1878, Winchester's New York Sales Office sold a variety of arms other than Winchester mfg. Double shotguns were purchased in England. Beginning in 1879, the shotguns were marked with the Winchester name and offered to the general and mail order trade. 6 grades of guns were offered, that included match guns, club guns, and classes A, B, C, & D. Records indicate that less than 10,000 of these doubles in all grades were imported. Bbl. 32" of laminated steel. Concave game rib is marked "WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO.", with "Match Gun", followed by New Haven, Conn. U.S.A.". Steel front bead. Fixed Mod. and Mod. chokes. Exposed hammer sidelock action, with double underlug locking having dolls head extension. Action locks and trigger guard have generous coverage of scroll engraving, with ornate borders, featuring a vignette of 2 pheasants on right lock, with a setter on the left lock. Both lock plates are marked "WINCHESTER REPEATING/ ARMS CO./ MATCH GUN". Double triggers and extractors. Splinter forearm and rnd. knob walnut stock have coarse hand checkering. LOP: 14" over original checkered horn buttplate. Bbls. and receiver have British proof marks. Weight: 9lbs. 10oz. CONDITION: metal finish has faded to gray, showing handling marks and spots of very light pitting. Right hammer was broken and has a welded repair, over a metal washer spacer. Forearm shows heavy wear and handling marks, with traces only of original checkering, having large chips along both bbl. channels near the tip. Stock shows heavy wear with dents and handling marks, having cracks extending from both lockplates and the buttplate. Action is worn and off face, with top lever sitting substantially left of center. Pitted bores. Both bbls. show slight ring bulges in choke areas. (01-27167/DS). ANTIQUE. $3,000-5,000.
