LEVER ACTION RIFLE. Cal. 44 WCF (44-40). NSN. Bbl. 24" octagon to rnd. Breech and muzzle ends of bbl. have added gold bands. Breech end of top flat has added marking "One of One Thousand". This marking is bordered by contemporary vine type foliate engraving on a punch dot background which extends to the adjacent flats and muzzle. Gold finished combination front sight, sporting rear sight, with long-range Vernier tang sight. Full length mag. 2nd Model case colored action with screw fastened dust cover rail. Lower tang is a pistol grip style replacement with set trigger apparently added. Lower inside of left tang is devoid of assembly numbers. Rifle is not serial numbered due to the replacement tang. Forearm and pistol grip stock with ebony insert of apparent XXX grade fancy black walnut have style H factory checkering. Stock was obviously added along with the replacement pistol grip tang and has no discernible assembly # remaining in the top tang channel. Stock has inletted sling swivels and added nickel finished Swiss Schuetzen style trapdoor buttplate. Mfg. circa 1879-1882. CONDITION: bbl. retains 80% lightly faded reblued finish showing edge wear with scattered spots of freckling. Bbl. markings appear to have been freshened. Mag. tube has 70% fading blue showing general light surface corrosion and pitting. Action retains some visible case colors in protected areas with the balance fading to mottled gray/brown showing carry wear and spotted corrosion. Sanded and refinished wood shows scratches and marks. Checkering is lightly freshened. Lower tang attachment screw is an inappropriate replacement. Added tang sight also has inappropriate screws. Sound action with functioning set trigger. Lightly pitted bore retains sound rifling. (01-26430/DS). ANTIQUE. $5,000-10,000.
