BREECHLOADING RIFLE. Cal. 25-25 S. S# 114710. Bbl. 30". Model 1885 Low Wall single shot breechloading rifle mfg. by Winchester in 1919. Top of the rnd. bbl. is marked with Winchester's 2-line mfg. and patent information, with the cal. designation "25-25.S." marked towards the breech. Underside of bbl. is marked with the cal. designation and a triad of factory proofs, with "NEW" stamped within the dovetail. Upper receiver tang is marked with the Winchester trademark logo. Metal components exhibit a blue finish overall, save for on the case colored breechblock and lever. Lightly sanded and refinished ebony inlaid schnabel tip forearm and straight grip buttstock with crescent steel buttplate. Dovetailed blade front sight with dovetailed semi-buckhorn V-notch rear sight. CONDITION: receiver retains fair amounts of its original factory blue finish, exhibiting wear and thinning overall that is fading to brown patina, with scattered superficial handling marks and spots of light surface oxidation. Bbl. retains the majority of its original blue finish, save for a large area of wear and thinning fading to gray patina, exhibiting light to mild pitting and patches of dark discoloration. Breechblock and lever retain traces of their original case colored finish. Brilliant mirror bore, exhibiting a few small scattered spots of light pitting, while retaining well defined rifling throughout. Proper manual mechanics. Wood furniture shows some some superficial marks and minor impressions from handling and storage, but otherwise remains sound. PROVENANCE: Estate of Groves Herrick. (25-5666/MLW). CURIO. $600-900.
