FACTORY LETTER & SPARE STOCK. Cal. 38-40. S# 305924. Bbl. 24 1/4". Model 1892 lever action rifle mfg. by Winchester in 1905. The top flat of the half octagonal bbl. is marked with Winchester's mfg. and patent information, with the cal. designation marked at the breech. Metal components exhibit a blue finish. Straight grip wood buttstock (with contemporary flat checkered black plastic buttplate) and forend have been sanded and revarnished at one time. Marbles No. 2 white dot beaded blade front sight, with V-notch flip-up ladder rear sight. Upper receiver tang is mounted with a flip-up aperture rear sight. Half-length mag. tube. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: period plain wood straight grip buttstock with crescent buttplate, as well as a factory letter. Factory letter indicates that this example was shipped with a half-octagon bbl., half-length mag., as well as a shotgun butt, was received in the warehouse on July 27th of 1906, and was shipped on August 31st of 1908 (Order # 165994). CONDITION: metal components retain traces of their original blue finish, with the balance retaining a dark brown patina, as well as light to mild surface oxidation overall. Bore is bright, exhibiting scattered spots/areas of dark pitting while retaining good rifling throughout. Wood furniture is good, as sanded and revarnished, exhibiting scattered marks and impressions from handling and storage, with the buttstock exhibiting a replaced section at the rear of the comb. Spare buttstock exhibits scattered marks and impressions from handling and storage, as well as flaking and wear to the varnish overall, with a couple of cracks stemming from the buttplate that do not appear to affect serviceability. Crescent buttplate exhibits a gray patina with scattered spots of mild to moderate pitting and oxidation overall. (24-3840/MLW). CURIO. $500-800.
