PEPPERBOX DERRINGER. Cal. 28 RF. S# 5262. Bbl. 3". Four-bbl. pepperbox derringer mfg. in Philadelphia, PA by C. Sharps & Co. Left side of the frame is marked "C. SHARPS/ PATENT 1859" within a circle, with "C. SHARPS & CO/ PHILADA. PA." marked on the right within a circle. Sides of the bbl. and brass frame exhibit professionally executed scroll engraving on a punch-dot background, with the frame also exhibiting a floral motif on either side. Rear grip strap and underside of frame exhibit matching pattern scroll engraving. Frame is mounted with 2-piece checkered brown gutta percha grips. Brass bead front sight, with frame notched rear sight. All numbers are matching and are present on the frame, bbl., and striker. CONDITION: brass frame exhibits a mellow patina, with some scattered spots of darker age-related discoloration overall. Steel bbl. exhibits a gray patina with light pitting and scattered spots of age-related discoloration. Bores are bright, exhibiting scattered spots of dark pitting while retaining strong rifling throughout. Gutta percha grips show some smoothing, as well as a few marks from handling and storage, but otherwise remain sturdy and serviceable. PROVENANCE: from the collection of a Tennessee gentleman.
