AND MILITARIA. Group consists of papers, letters & photos relating to 1st Lieutenant Paul M. Yannello, a B17 bomber pilot who died in a mid-air collision over the English channel. There are letters of bereavement which include Henry Stimson, Secretary of War, George Marshall, Chief of Staff & Henry "Hap" Arnold, Commanding General Army Air Forces. The letters are dated October 1943. There is additionally a certificate from the White House to Joseph Yannello recognizing the services of his late son & signed by President John F. Kennedy. / Papers, photos & memorabilia relating to Colonel Harry C. Hancock dating from 1939 to the late Cold War era. Colonel Hancock apparently served w/ the RAF as part of NATO in the 1960s. The papers include a log w/ WWII dates detailing his flight time in a wide variety of aircraft. / Scrapbook of Sergeant Dean W. Pulsipher detailing his service in the Signal Corp during WWII. The scrapbook contains a wonderful variety of photos, postcards & includes a Victory edition of Yank magazine. / Papers & photos relating to Staff Sergeant Mark D. Backenstoe who served w/ the 17th Bombardment Wing "Night Intruders" in Korea. / Additional items in the lot include a white cloth armband w/ the American flag used by airborne forces in the invasion of North Africa. This is a very scarce item. / Brown leather fleece lined tanker's helmet from WWII. Marked at rear w/ a "D&M" triangular logo topped by a bird dog. The size is marked "16H". Helmet is in worn condition w/ scuffing. Stitching is generally tight. / Brown leather M7 shoulder holster for the 1911 Colt. Marked on back "U.S. ENGER-KRESS". Holster is in a worn, but serviceable condition. / Unmarked engraved brass framed 12 ga. flare gun. 4" smooth bore barrel. Blued steel grips. Flare gun has well worn appearance w/ patina. Pistol is difficult to cock, but appears fully functional. Lightly oxidized bore. / Repaired early European bayonet frog, likely GRAS. / There is a quantity of US & foreign patches, insignias & pins including three pins relating to the Italian communist party "P.S.I." & "P.C.I.". / The group also contains a brown leather carrying case marked "AIRCRAFT INSPECTORS KIT / AIR FORCE / UNITED STATES ARMY". Case is in only fair condition w/ separation issues. (02-23838/RW). NON-GUN. $900-1,300.
