Scarce WW1 US "Deep Salade" helmet. Designed in 1917 with only 2000 units made by Ford in 1918. The helmet was based on 15th century helmets of Italy. The helmet offered better protection than French & British designs of the period but was rejected due to its similar appearance to German M16 helmets. Helmet features a nicely restored green sandy-textured paint. Leather pads inside are newer replacements. Liner & chinstrap present. Also present are what appear to be a separate original leather pad in worn condition; CONDITION: paint shows show light flaking & oxidation. Leather & canvas show scattered staining & age related wear. (02-25143/MJC). $1500-2000.
