Cal. 8mm Lebel. S# L2250. Bbl. 18". Matching numbers on floorplate & forend. Bolt is mismatched & buttstock has two sets of faint numbers neither of which are matching. Right side of bbl. has 1938 date & MAC markings for Chatellerault arsenal. Left side of bbl. has serial w/ various French proofs. Left side of receiver has Tulle arsenal markings & 1886/93/R35 marking. Ladder rear sight graduated to 1000m. Wide blade front sight. European hardwood stock set w/ left side sling swivels & original sling. It is stated that this rifle was found in a cave in Brest, France in 1944. Purportedly in the cave there was a large amount of ammo, rifles w/ bent bbls. & destroyed stocks in the cave but there is no written provenance to prove this. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: R35 bayonet w/ matching scabbard in fair condition w/ overall oxidation staining & some light pitting. CONDITION: arsenal reworked stock set shows scattered dings & handling marks. Upper tang is proud of wood. Metal retains 60% arsenal black enamel finish w/ scattered flaking. Good bore w/ some light pitting & frosting but strong rifling. (23-1913/MJC). CURIO. $400-600.
