“KILL PENNANT”. 29 x 23.5 screened canvas stamped by maker on reverse: “Carlton Company, Rochester, NY”. The pennant features Bowfin’s logo of fish shooting torpedo with bow. 9 stars below logo represent 9 war patrols. The pennant below the stars represents the presidential unit citation given for its second patrol. The numerous flags represent the 39 Japanese merchant vessel, four Japanese military ships sunk, and two Japanese military ships damaged. Another flag, a French tri-color, was for the sinking of the Vichy French cargo ship SS Van Vollenhoven which was used by the Japanese at the time. The Carlton Manufacturing Company, maker of this pennant was formed in 1903 by Harvey Carlton mainly fishing gear. During World War 2 the company made pennants for US submarines and aircraft to commemorate their kills in action. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: short history of the USS Bowfin.
