CARBINE. Cal. 8mm Lebel. S# A18561. Matching serial numbers on bbl. and buttstock. Bbl. 17 3/4". Import-marked on right side of bbl. Carbine was marked on receiver as model 1892 but was upgraded in late WWI as a model M16. Receiver is marked on left side with the script "CHATELLERAULT / MLE 1892." Turned down bolt handle. Ladder rear sight graduated to 2,000 meters. Wide blade front sight. Stacking bar and bayonet stud are present. Rifle has had the 5-shot mag. conversion. Hardwood stock set with added handguard. Provision for side sling. Brown leather sling has partially legible markings, with the date appearing to be 1946. CONDITION: buttstock has been cleaned, very moderate wear, staining, and handling marks throughout. Repaired cracks, missing chips, and heavy wear. Metal is turned mostly gray and patina. Heavy wear with light oxidation and pitting. Bore has worn lands turning dark in grooves. (24-6002/RW). CURIO. $200-300.
