OVER FRANCE. This section of wing fabric is painted in what is known as lozenge pattern camouflage. It is from the top wing of a German Albatross D VA No. 5390/17. It was shot down over France on December 17th, 1917 by Lt. J.L. Sandy and Sgt. H.F. Hughes in a RE 8 of No. 3 squadron of the Australian Flying Corps. Interestingly, the fabric section bears traces of black and white paint from the Maltese Cross wing insignia. This wing section is accompanied by superb and complete documentation from the head conservator of WWI aircraft at the Australian War Memorial Museum. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: several copies of information on the planes involved as well as a handwritten letter addressing the wing section. Also included is a slide/photo documenting wing color and pattern with notes pertaining to the restoration of the aircraft. CONDITION: the aircraft skin section is contained and protected by a large riker mount case. As expected, the section shows age and wear. (02-24275/BF). $1,200-1,600.
