Cal. 8x57 (8mm Mauser). S# 9506f. Bbl. 29". Blade front sight. Ladder rear sight graduated to 2050m. Rear sight parts and bolt head are mismatched; action screws are unnumbered replacements, but all other visible parts are matching with bands having full four-digit numbers. Rear band has a unit marking that reads "13.P.1.81" for Wurttemberg Pioneer Battalion 13. Receiver has Danzig markings with 1890 date. Bolt and receiver are in-the-white; the balance of other parts is blued. Walnut stock with bottom-mounted sling hardware and leather slings. Right side of the butt has faint Imperial cartouches. Buttplate has "7" for Rastatt depot. Cleaning rod present. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: 1871 sword bayonet, made by Clemens & Jung, with lined-out unit marking that appears to read "1G.R.RE.3.787." Bayonet has brass handles and is in worn condition with oxidation throughout. Leather scabbard is present, marked to the same unit that is missing its tip. CONDITION: refinished stock has added varnish with a long repaired crack on the right side between the bands, another long crack on the right side near the recoil lug running from above the mag. to under the bbl, a crack above the left side of the recoil lug, and a small crack behind the upper tang; the stock otherwise shows scattered black staining, some chipping, dings, and handling marks. Receiver, buttplate, and bolt have a cleaned appearance, with dings, oxidation staining, and pitting. Balance of metal has a cleaned gray appearance with pitting, traces of blue, and oxidation. Safety is not engaging, but the bolt otherwise cycles properly when hand-cycled. Bore is partially bright with scattered oxidation and pitting but has evident rifling. (01-26084/MJC). ANTIQUE. $600-900.
