LT. BIRRELL OF THE 548th BOMB SQUADRON OF THE 8th AIR FORCE. This fine original leather A-2 flight jacket has its original label that reads “TYPE A-2 DRAWING No. 30-1415 A.C. No. W535 oc 29191 PROPERTY AIR FORCE U.S. ARMY BRONCO MFG. CORP. NEW YORK, N.Y.” The size of the jacket is 40, and the original hanging strap is above the interior tag. The left breast has a leather tag that reads “LT. J. C. BIRRELL” above a painted leather squadron patch depicting Bugs Bunny riding a bomb. The reverse features blue & red paint and shows a WWII bomber above 35 painted bombs. The bombs are numbered with the area to be bombed painted beside each individual bomb. A wonderful visually impactful relic of the European Theater during WWII. CONDITION: jacket is in solid condition with no major faults and use wear only. The zipper functions, and snaps are in place on the pocket flaps. The elastic waistband is in used but solid condition. Cuffs show wear at the edges, and the left cuff has a period-stitched repair. Painted decoration remains sharp and easily read, and the patch is quite striking. (02-22441/BF). $1,500-2,500.
