J. N. BYERGO. This original well-worn size 40 A-2 flight jacket was one of 50,000 manufactured by the Rough Wear Clothing Company to comply with a contract dated 27 April, 1942. The jacket is undecorated but has a leather nametag at the left breast that reads "J. N. BYERGO" in gold leaf on brown leather. As correct, there are two outside flap pockets near the waist and two interior flap pockets also near the waist. The cuffs and waist are rib knit and the usual brown color. The lining is a red/brown cotton and the interior pockets are khaki. A label at interior of the neck reads "TYPE A-2 DRAWING NO. 30-1415 CONTRACT NO. W535 AC-27752 ROUGH WEAR CLOTHING CO. MIDDLETOWN, PA. PROPERTY AIR FORCE U.S.ARMY". John Neff Byergo of New York was a Captain in the 366 Army Air Force Fighter Group during WWII. Among other awards, he received the Air Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: copy of news paper articles relating to the death of John Byergo. CONDITION: leather shows numerous scuffs and abrasions, as one would expect. Knit areas show wear, a few tears, and some insect damage. The zipper functions well. Leather is a bit dry but generally supple and malleable. (02-24292/BF). $900-1,200.
