A fine, issued, and used WWII British commando knife named after its designer, Major W.E. Fairbairn. This knife was issued to British commandos as a fighting knife and also was issued to American rangers while they were in England being trained by the British commandos. There is little doubt that thousands of privately purchased examples were carried by British as well as American soldiers during the war. This example measures 11" overall out of the sheath with a 6 1/2" blade featuring a raised medial ridge. The crossguard is marked on the top with a broad arrow and "B2". The other side is marked "ENGLAND". These marks indicate British military-issued. The grip appears to be copper-plated over a lead zinc alloy with a ringed grip. Sheath is brown leather with a brass tip. CONDITION: blade shows significant use and has seen several bouts of sharpening. Hilt shows light overall wear. Sheath shows some scuffs and scrapes. (02-23214-5/BF). $250-450.
