ENHANCEMENTS & MORE. This is an original German helmet & liner with what appears to be an original inscription in white paint on the inside that reads “CAPTURED BELGIUM 51st ENG. COMBAT BN. CHRISTMAS -1944-”. At some point after the war, we believe the white paint and the SS decal were added to the helmet to enhance collector value. The original helmet has a dark field green finish. The interior left is stamped “SE64”. The interior rear is stamped “1805” and is painted with the name “Muller”. The interior crown is painted, as indicated above. Original 8-tongue leather liner stamped “57” in a circle. As stated, the white paint and SS decal are later additions. No chinstrap. SUPPORTING DOCUMENTATION: a large, soft cover book titled “HOLDING THE LINE”, which is the story of the 51st Engineer Combat Battalion, a book titled, “UNBROKEN LINE THE 51st ENGINEER COMBAT BATTALION FROM NORMANDY TO MUNICH”, a book titled “BATTLE OF THE BULGE”, and a DVD titled “BATTLE OF THE BULGE”. There is also photocopied information on the Battle of the Bulge and related information. CONDITION: helmet has substantial original finish, and the white finish is about 50%. The liner shows light to moderate wear. The interior crown painting is quite legible. All publications show light wear, and the DVD appears fully functional. (02-19751/BF). $400-600.
