HELMET. A rare original late-war German Fallschirmjager (paratrooper) helmet. This helmet has quite obviously been struck by a bullet in the area of the left temple. The bullet did not penetrate the helmet, but the impression of the slug and the depression around it can clearly be seen. Helmet has a dark gray/blue-painted finish with aluminum fasteners connecting the band. The interior rear appears to be stamped "CKL68" and "465", but the stamping is quite difficult to read. The original liner is dry with minor losses, and the remains of interior ink stamps can be seen. The chinstrap is mostly present but quite deteriorated. A poignant souvenir salvaged from a battlefield and worn by a German paratrooper that may or may not have survived the bullet strike to his helmet. CONDITION: helmet finish appears to be better than 90%. One aluminum fastener is missing. Liner is dry but nearly complete. Chinstrap shows heavy wear. (02-22650-1/BF). $3,000-5,000.
