MANUFACTURED BY METALLWAREN-WAFFEN BUDAPEST. Cal. 8mm Mauser. S# 5044b. Bbl. 23 5/8". All visible numbers match. Rifles were manufactured for Germany in Hungary based on the Hungarian Model 1935 rifle and modifying it to conform with German Model 98K Mauser specifications. Receiver ring is marked on top w/ "jhv" "44" German eagle "173". Left side of receiver ring & bbl. have German eagle proofs. Left receiver rail marked "G 98-40". Turned down bolt handle w/ flattened checkered knob. Tangent rear sight graduated to 2,000 meters. Inverted V front sight w/ protective hood. Bayonet bar & cleaning rod are present. Stamped bands retain by screws. Milled trigger guard, floorplate & buttplate. Laminated stock set w/ German issue brown leather sling. Buttstock is marked under grip w/ eagle "WaA 176". Stock is marked at belly w/ "jhv". CONDITION: stock set has original finish w/ light wear, staining & scattered handling marks. Buttstock has added finish on both sides in area of sling mortice. Metal retains 75% original thinning blue w/ light wear & scattered handling marks. Very good shiny bore. PROVENANCE: from the estate collections of Charles P. Obremski. (22-1283/RW).
