RIFLE. Cal. 8x57 (8mm Mauser). S# 1518dd. Bbl. 23 1/2". Blade front sight with protective hood. Tangent rear sight graduated to 2000m. A very fine example of a late-war German K98K rifle. Bolt handle, cocking piece, and bolt shroud are all matching. Bolt is also marked with a "WaA140" Waffenamt. Other visible parts are unnumbered, as is common for late-war rifles. Receiver top is marked with an eagle "63" and "dou 44", denoting 1944 production by Waffenwerke Brunn II in occupied Czechoslovakia. Triggerguard is marked "qnw" and floorplate is marked only with a "1". Blued finish. Laminated stock set with cupped buttplate and takedown disc. Left-side sling provisions with the original leather sling. Stock is not drilled for a cleaning rod. CONDITION: stock shows some finish loss from rear band removal on the right side. Stock set otherwise shows some moderate abrasions on the butt, scattered dings, and handling wear. Metal retains 85% of its original blue with scattered fading to brown and some light oxidation. Action functions properly. Very good, bright bore. PROVENANCE: the collection of Dr. Fred Novy, ASAC. (24-1837/MJC). CURIO. $2,500-3,500.
