BOX. A seldom seen WWII era sextant manufactured by the C. Plath Company of Hamburg, Germany. This sextant was used by the German Navy, or Kriegsmarine, and is numbered "746" on the index arm. There is a ground off area on the arm where the eagle and party symbol was engraved at one time. The area is now engraved with a "H.M." possibly for Hamburg Marine. The composite handhold is marked with C. Plath's logo. The entire sextant has a combination of smooth and textured black finishes with white calibrated degree markings and a composite white dial with black degree markings. All mirrors and filters seem to be in place and functional, though the sextant has not been tested. The box contains a boxed stopwatch of the period that is not functional. The lid of the box contains a 1943 registration and calibration card with a party ink stamp that reads "Deutsche Seewarte Hamburg Gruppe N/II" with an eagle and party symbol. The case has a metal tag on the front that is marked "G.G. JOHNSON". A remnant of an early Gulf Oil shipping tag is attached to the leather carrying strap. CONDITION: the box generally shows moderate wear. The sextant appears functional and shows minor wear to the black finish. Some mirrors and lenses show small spots. (02-24248/BF). $1,000-1,500.
