KIT. This extensive kit was made by Chiron of Tuttlingen, Germany in 1939 for use by the German Army. The heavy metal box containing the surgical implements and tools measures approx. 6 1/2" x 12" x 20". It is painted dark field green and stenciled on the top "HAUPTBESTECK 1939". The interior of the lid is marked "CHIRON TUTTLINGEN HAUPTBESTECK 1939" along with a complete inventory of all instruments and supplies originally contained within the kit. The interior contains several separate metal trays containing scores of various surgical instruments that include, but are not limited to, scalpels, probes, saws, and a myriad of other specialized surgical instruments. We do not know whether the kit is 100% complete but there is a vast number of instruments contained in this kit. CONDITION: the outside of the box shows numerous scratches and scrapes with some oxidation. The interior lid lining is detached but present. Most instruments seem to have a coating of grease to preserve them and, due to their stainless steel construction, most show dirt but little wear or oxidation. (02-23821/BF). $1,500-2,500.
