A rare example of a survival machete issued to Luftwaffe personnel serving in tropical areas. Machetes like this were part of a survival kit that included flares, food, water, etc. Overall length: 21 3/4". Blade length: 16”. The plain blade swells towards the tip and is marked near the hilt “A W (logo) S Alcoso SOLINGEN”. S-shaped blued cross guard with blued pommel & side straps. 2-Piece wood grip secured by 2 screws with 8 serrations on each side. Iron scabbard is blued with frog stud in place. CONDITION: blade shows some staining, but no hard use. Blued finish is nearly 100% on the hilt, and the grips show only minor scuffs. The scabbard is in truly amazing condition with 99% of the blued finish intact. This is likely one of the finer examples known of this rare Third Reich edged weapon. PROVENANCE: From the Lifelong Collection of Glen E. Mattox. (02-18294/BF). $1,500-1,800.
