HELMET. The Luftwaffe SSK90 protective flight helmet was adopted on 8 May of 1941 and was manufactured exclusively by Siemens Company. It had interior steel plates to afford pilots more protection from shrapnel and flak. The heavy helmet tended to cause more injuries than it prevented, therefor it was withdrawn from service on 26 May 1941 after only a small number were manufactured. The helmet has a brown leather cover and securing straps and a heavy cloth interior. The interior label reads " SIEMENS Baumuster SSK 90 Hersteller: LUFTFAHRTGERXTEWERK HAKENFELDE GMBH STRIWA Kopfgrosse ". This helmet has been misidentified for many years as a German jet pilots helmet. It was, in fact, long out of production by the time jets were developed. CONDITION: light wear overall with scattered scuffs and scrapes. (02-24875/BF). $2,000-3,000.
