VICE ADMIRAL KYUJI KUBO. Overall length: 17 3/4". Blade length: 11 3/4”. Blade has a very irregular hamon. There is a full-length, medium sized hi on one side, and a half-length double hi with an arrowhead end on the other side. The blade is signed “Kanenobu Saku.” It is Mino, Shizou School and is late Koto to early Shinto period. A similar blade by Kanefusa is in the collection of the Boston Museum. Silvered copper habaki with what appears to be a seaweed design. Gilded brass, slightly S-shaped tsuba. White same grip with gilded wire wrap. There is a 5-Petal cherry blossom on one side of the grip, and a kamon for the families of Kubo & Hidaka on the other side. Gilded kashira with a cherry blossom at the top. There is a gilded fuchi with a half cherry blossom on each side. Saya is gilded brass mounted sharkskin. Mounts have a cherry blossom design. SUPPORTING DOCUMENTATION: a looseleaf binder with information on the attribution of the dagger, along with history of Admiral Kyuji Kubo. CONDITION: blade has a finely done polish. Dagger shows light overall wear. Saya also shows light wear overall. PROVENANCE: From the Lifelong Collection of Glen E. Mattox. (02-18431/BF). $2,000-3,000.
