Cal. 6.5 Jap. S# 33463. Bbl. 31". Blade front sight with protective ears and ladder rear sight, graduated to 2400m. Matching numbers on the receiver, bolt handle, floorplate, and safety; the extractor and bolt release appear to have two different assembly numbers; the firing pin and bayonet lug are unnumbered. Dust cover is present but mismatched. Receiver top has intact mum and Type 38 markings, with some added white highlight paint. Left side of the receiver has a faint series marking that appears to be either 22nd or 24th, a serial number, and the Kokum symbol. Blued finish. Hardwood stock set with a two-piece butt, bottom-mounted sling swivels, and leather military-style sling. Handguard is loose, but the stock does not appear to be duffel cut. Underside of the wrist has strong Kanji markings. Cleaning rod is present. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: Type 30 bayonet, made by an unknown company under Kokura supervision, with original scabbard and repro frog. Bayonet has a brightly finished blade and a hooked crossguard. Grips appear sanded. Metal parts of the bayonet are turning gray with some oxidation, black staining, and pitting. CONDITION: stock set retains much of its Urushi finish, with some thin cracks on the left side between the bands, some scattered chipping, dings, flaking, and handling wear. Dust cover has a mix of light gray patina with traces of blue, some pitting, and oxidation. Floorplate is a bit bent. Balance of the metal retains a high degree of its original blue but shows overall fading with some scattered oxidation and pitting. Action functions properly when hand-cycled. Dark bore, showing scattered oxidation and pitting but strong rifling. (24-6545/MJC). CURIO. $400-600.
