Cal. 6.5 Jap. S# 17525. Bbl. 19". Blade front sight with protective ears. Ladder rear sight graduated to 2000m. First variant Type 44 with short bayonet housing and folding spike bayonet. Carbine appears to have been arsenal-reworked with bolt handle, safety, and floorplate all matching-numbered to the receiver. Bayonet housing and rear sight parts bear different assembly numbers. Firing pin and extractor appear unnumbered. Receiver top has ground mum and Type 44 markings. Left side of the receiver has a serial and Kokura marking. Blued finish with strawed small parts. Asian hardwood stock set with two piece butt and left side sling swivels. Strong Kanji markings on underside of butt. CONDITION: stock set retains a high degree of arsenal Urushi finish, with scattered dings, scratches, and handling marks. Metal retains 80% arsenal-rework blue and straw with scattered fading and oxidation. Buttplate and rear sling swivel show heavy oxidation. Action functions properly when hand-cycled. Good, bright bore with some scattered frosting and light pitting but strong rifling. PROVENANCE: from the collection of Mark Ivey Godfrey. (24-5249/MJC). CURIO. $600-900.
