CLASS ALVIN GEORGE HAASE KNIFE GROUPING WITH DOCUMENTS. Alvin Haase enlisted in the USCG at the outbreak of the war in 1942. He was assigned as an Electrician First Class on LST-202, which was a troop and equipment transporter staffed by the USCG that was launched July 17th 1943. The provenance indicated that LST-202 had seen combat with attempts by Japanese Naval bombers to sink it during its service. Immediately after the war the LST-202 made 4-5 trips back and forth to the Philippines transporting men and equipment back to the US. On his final trip he was informed that he could continue with the ship to the Philippines then get home, which would have been a couple of month trip or get dropped in New Guinea and find his own way. He chose to hike through the jungle of New Guinea to a US landing strip where he found a fligh to a European base before returning home. This grouping contains 3 knives that belonged to Haase.1) USN Mark 2 Camillus fighting knife with USN MK2 sheath. Haase reportedly carried this throughout the war. CONDITION: very good with nice blade finish. Showing signs of use. 2) CUSTOM SHIPBOARD MADE KNIFE made from a bayonet blade with a 50 BMG brass handle, 42 date Australian penny guard, 1940 Panama coin pummel, and 3 attached foreign coins on the grip areas. It is accompanied by a custom leather scabbard. This knife was reportedly mad during his time on the LST-202. CONDITION: overall good custom theater knife with some tearing and scuffing to the scabbard. 3) Marbles Gladstone skinner style knife with scabbard. Family lore is unsure of the history of this knife, however it was stored with the other knives and his service pistol that he kept after the war that is not included with this grouping. CONDITION: fair with a broken strap. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: 3 ring binder with history and photos of LST-202 and Haase. (02-26346/ZAL). NON-GUN. $500-800.
